Truly it is hard to describe it in layman terms when all I know is the military lingo. haha. Who would think I would ever be using this stuff I accumulated over the years, but you never know in the age we live in.

A cheap version is of course a Gas mask (NBC), some rain gear (coat and pants), rubber gloves and rubber boots. The hood of the rain coat gets duct tapped to the Gas Mask (around the forehead and cheeks to make it air tight). The Gloves get duct tapped around the wrists to the arms of the rain coat (wrist area) and should be air tight. The Knee high rubber boots should be duct tapped to the legs of the rain coat, again air tight. I would also wear a beanie hat over the straps of the gas mask and still away from the front of the mask so the hood can still be duct tapped to the mask, but this is optional. It would just help keep the head warm during cold nights or seasons.

What I would wear under it is a cotton t-shirt and even a wool long sleeved shirt. Cotton long johns and simple blue jeans. Cotton and wool socks one on top of the other on the feet.

What this does is cotton soaks up the sweat if you sweat, wool will keep you warm if it gets cold out or is already cold out. It may seem like a two person job, but a person can do it themselves with some practice in a short amount of time with a mirror to check for any missed areas, especially on the head.

Here are some other tutorials to give you ideas if you never used an NBC MOPP dress before.
Or attire, however you want to say it layman's terms. haha

We have been trying to get some good military surplus chemical suits, gloves and boots ordered for months for our store, but we keep seeming to get distracted with other projects. Hopefully, these supplies will not become too important to have, but we will at least try to get some stocked.

I know you are supposed to have a decon chamber outside your safe room for washing off when coming inside from a radiation environment, but have never looked into all the details. Your posting on bomb shelters had some brief mention, but no details. If a person is going to go to the trouble of building an NBC shelter, it would make sense to build a separate decon room outside the entrance. A posting on this would be valuable info, including the full decon process. Inevitably, people will have to come or go during an event, so comprehensive decon chamber and process info as well as radiation protection clothing would seem of paramount importance.

We have the nuclear war survival manual in the BSOSC library for anyone interested in learning more...jpf

Good point JP. I guess this can be also under NBC shelters too. Every shelter that is designed for NBC should have also a decontamination chamber, just in case someone is caught outside during the radiation fall out. The Decontamination chamber will always be near the front door, thus even having an enter and exit door from the outside itself, thus another room that goes into the main shelter will be the dressing room and shower room even once the decontamination chamber has done its job of washing the subject or the person may have to spend the time in the next room being attended by a medic, which if enough rads are detected in the persons body they will be taking KI (Potassium Iodide) tablets. This may even take weeks to determine if the subject will survive, but the first 48-72 hours will give a good indication if the person has a chance of survival at all. Nothing to worry about, just the first signs of such a type of disaster most will seek shelter anyway. I think it is important to think of having a decontamination chamber since if the person is dressed in a MOPP outfit, there is a good chance they were not exposed to radiation higher than what their body can get rid of naturally, but the suit will have to be cleaned and rad tests done to ensure the radiation levels are safe before entering the next room.

The MOPP gear will save lives, thus all it needs is to be cleaned of all dangerous radiation fallout and the person will be safe for the most part.

Anyway, I have found a patent that shows the design of a decontamination chamber which will help others in building their own or they can look for other ideas as well in the information highway.

Good point to bring up Jpf.
