Bullet Resistant Walls

In our most recent BSOSC meeting, Dave H. put on an excellent demonstration on how to build a frame wall filled with 3/4 fractured gravel that would stop bullet penetration. We will try to have more detailed info posted if anyone cares to learn more about this simple process...jpf .--- .--. ..-.

I can't wait to see the results. It would be interesting to see if there is any bullet stopping capabilities of home doors.

You can build a pretty substantial and anti-ballistic structure using gabion walls.

Gabion walls are really nothing more than retaining walls constructed out of rectangular wire mesh baskets (fabricated of heavily galvanized wire), which are filled with stone and stacked one on top of the other, until the design specs are reached. They are usually placed in tiers that step back with the slope rather than vertically.

Wikipedia says that: The most common civil engineering use of gabions is to stabilize shorelines or slopes against erosion. Other uses include retaining walls, temporary floodwalls, to filter silt from runoff, for small or temporary/permanent dams, river training, channel lining.[2] They may be used to direct the force of a flow of flood water around a vulnerable structure. Gabions are also used as fish barriers on small streams."

Further, they say that:

"Gabion baskets have some advantages over loose riprap because of their modularity and ability to be stacked in various shapes; they are also resistant to being washed away by moving water. Gabions also have advantages over more rigid structures because they can conform to ground movement, dissipate energy from flowing water, and drain freely. Their strength and effectiveness may increase with time in some cases, as silt and vegetation fill the interstitial voids and reinforce the structure. They are sometimes used to keep stones which may fall from a cutting or cliff from endangering traffic on a thoroughfare."

Now take that a step further, and think about how you could build anti-ballistic shelter out of it. The possibilities are endless.

JPF reply to Alex-gabion walls...Re: Bullet Resistant Walls

Hey Alex,
Thanks for the input on the gabion walls, ie rock filled wire baskets. I whole-heartedly agree, this would be a good consideration in our area where rocks seem to grow about as fast as weeds! These could be constructed numerous ways. Locally, the commonly available welded wire cattle panels could be placed a few feet apart to build a quite protective outer perimeter wall around the place. This would be pretty handy since most bsosc members have country homes. Those in town might get some unwelcome official visitors with gabion walls around their place. This concept could easily be taken a step further and applied to the rocket stove technology. We and Ron P. did this in our greenhouses with rock filled thermal mass cavities for the heat storage. Heaven forbid, but if someone was shooting at us, I think I would rather be down low in our greenhouse than in the main house. Since we use our shotcreted 3D panels for the walls, they will also resist blowing apart with a close by detonation you mention...jpf
