Howdy All,
Below is an excellent posting from a sharp guy on today's digest of one of the better prep groups to which I'm subscribed. People were asking about alternative, cheap, DIY types of shelters and this poster went to a lot of work posting so much info on many, many construction methods with many hyperlinks to sites on the various types. This posting has a lot of excellent resource info...jpf

What part of the country are you in?
Rule of Alternative Homes is; look out the window; what do you see?; build with that.

LOTS OF ROCK IS GOOD; ANY HOME YOU BUILD WILL NEED A 2 FOOT STEM WALL TO PREVENT ROT, MOLD, EROSION FROM SNOW, RAIN, ETC.

a friend here is sheathing his 2000.00 Mobile Home (MH) with CEB this year, then next, he will do a second wall, making an Envelope House (EH) with a dead air space. TOTAL COST; 4Gs.

COB (COB) :o) is good, and folks here use limestone gravel instead of sand -cheaper, and you also need clay, AND A BINDER LIKE STRAW, HAY, ETC. We lived in a COB HOUSE for a year that was built using 5' by 7' tarps to mix dry, then water and straw sprinkled in while dancing on it to mush it up. TOTAL COST WAS 2000.00.
A grandmother and her three y.o. built one. You can too.

CEB -Compressed Earth Block is good, but you need a ram machine. Plans are 10 bucks or so, need welder. GRACO has a much better one than the old CINVA RAM.

Cordwood (CW) is great if you have trees.

Rammed Earth (RE) is cool; you use dirt and pack it using a handle and tamper made from cottage cheese container, whatever size you or kids can handle, etc filled with concrete.

EarthBag (EB) is great; used/misprint rice bags and filling can be done on the wall with coffee cans / buckets, etc.

All of those methods use small "pieces" at a time, and so entire family can help ie blobs of COB, (COBS fights are great fun along with the water fights, and clay is very healing and detoxing.)
For CW, you use chunks of firewood 18" or so, and you can do COB for mortar.
CEB blocks are about 10 lbs +/- and you can mix in grain hulls for insulation / lightness
Pails, or cans or buckets of fill for RE, EB,
Recyclers nearby?
Newspapers make PaperCrete (PC)
Tires make EarthShips (ES)
Bottles, cans all can be built into COB, CW, CEB, EB, ES; RE only one would not be good in. This gives light, beauty, and uses recycles instead of stuff you spend $ on.

Make a Hoop House (HH) from chain link top rail and a bender, smaller ones for storage or kitchen or bedrooms, 10, 12, or 20 feet wide; Cheap-Homemade- Greenhouse- Quick-Hoop- House-Bender and greenhouse poly with tarp or billboard (also divider walls) cover to protect it from wind, or with a blower, to double wall dead airspace insulate it.

Make a HH from PVC; LOOK AT; SHELTER SYSTEMS
THEIR CRYSTAL CAVES AND GRIP CLIPS!!!

Yurts, tipis, etc can be made from PVC, Bamboo, etc, and here is an example; Spiral Domes;
These frames could be made from PVC conduit, (1 1/2 to 2" grey is best, and paint white to prevent UV; works fine; my solarium is 10 YO and fine; it was grey and i painted it) using 45 degree elbows for the legs, etc. With the opening at top, You can have a fire in these; nice in the winter. Very excellent design, a small, very portable, 4 season Yurt.

simple, fire capable yurts

I got the link from old Ben, of cheap shelters, and year round yurt, etc. He does buy and test somethings, but I do not think he has done that with this, yet.

Because I am working on trying to figure out how to shelter millions of folks, I am looking out for designs which can be approximated, or duplicated cheaply. That is why I mentioned the PVC grey conduit. I used that to make a solarium on the south side of my house in 2003, and it is still fine. I painted them with white paint
to reduce UV degradation.

You tube has clips on cheap yurts, tipis, etc. The framework is critical, but can be shingled over with
multiple fabrics, multiple layers, etc, then wrapped with cordage. Light up a fire, and you are out of the weather; much better than a cardboard box, or a WalMart tent with no heat of any kind.

Would it be worth moving from a city home to this kind of housing situation???

"OVERALL, most folks PAY 1000.00 A MONTH TO LIVE IN A HIGHLY DANGEROUS, COMPLETELY IMMORAL, STRESS FILLED SITUATION NOW; WHICH AFTER TSHTF WILL BECOME A HELL OF HORRORS. WITH 2 MONTHS WORTH OF THAT $ YOU CAN HAVE A MOBILE HOME, AND THEN RETROFIT IT TO YOUR HEARTS CONTENT;
SHEATH THE OUTSIDE WITH; COB, CORDWOOD, COBWOOD STRAW, COB-STRAW, ETC OR BUY A CAMPER OR RV AND LIVE IN THAT WHILE BUILDING A COB HOUSE, ENJOYING THE HECK OUT OF LIFE...

YOU ARE PAYING 4 TIMES EVERY MONTH WHAT WE PAY IN A YEAR FOR HOUSING; OUR TAXES ARE ABOUT $250.00 A YEAR!!! OH, YEAH, YOU WILL BE HAPPY YOU MADE THE DECISION TO MOVE, YOU WILL LOVE IT."

then you live in that, while building a cheap house; cob, rammed earth, compressed earth block, earth-ship, straw bale, earth bag, etc, etc; which uses indigenous material, and are labor intensive, but when you do not have money, or a job, hey, what else do you have to do, except work to provide food ( garden) and shelter
(alternative house), right???

Also, you can get benders for 1 5/8ths inch chain link fence top-rail, tubing for $50.00 But It Now with free s/h

and make greenhouses/ hoop-houses. Friends have been using that for a community building/kitchen/ bathroom/ bedroom for years now. It was very cheap, as they got the steel at a "fire sale" but it would still be a perfectly adequate shelter year round; very simple to put up, and still hundreds of time cheaper than a conventional house. It would take 21 pieces of tubing, doing seven (7) ribs, and three (3) 10 ft pcs per rib. Use scrap wood/tubing for perlins and diagonal reinforcement.

With adequate "geodesicing" ie diagonal struts, using alternate materials, you could stretch the 21 pieces to make a 20 ft by 30 ft Hoop House, normal would be 24 ft. That would be about 300 bucks @ $15 per stick) for your basic main "framing" material. Greenhouse 6 mil 4 year poly is 400 bucks give or take for a 32 by 100 ft roll. You would use a 32 by 60 chunk of the roll if you doubled the poly for added insulation and protection. The remnant will make a double layer 20 by 20 hoop-house.

Maximum efficiency if you have level space, etc, would be to make a 20 by 50 hoop house and only framing in two ends instead of four. By eventually building interior walls, you can have a bathroom, kitchen, bedrooms, etc.

As far as basic shelter needs, though, allowing for another $300 for salvaged bartered wood and steel for the end walls, this would give you 1000 SF of 4 season living for $1000.00... a buck a foot!!! OK....NOW... .because what you have here is very lightweight, very efficient, very strong, and is also waterproof, windproof, etc, what you really have is a $1000.00 roofing system roofing system!!!

Just build up Cordwood, or Cob, Rammed Earth (RE), or Earth-Bag -Free Formed Rammed Earth (FFRE), or Compressed Earth Block (CEB) or Machine Rammed Earth MRE, or Straw Bale, walls, etc, etc, and you have a
usable house; just by bolting/anchoring this down on the top!!!! But it doesn't stop there!!! With the purchase of this amazing new roofing system, you will also receive a fully functional 1000 sf greenhouse, a
200 sf passive solar water heating system (which can be solar powered), and also a passive solar heating system(which can be solar powered).

With appropriate screening material and a catwalk around the greenhouse/roof, you can control heat in the summer as well; solar vents at either end, as well as screened, roll up sides. "That's right folks; now what am I bid???" or; "Just wait, Mr Popeil says that for 3 easy payments of just $350.00..".. :o)

Now, if that is not cheap enough, you could use PVC, just paint what ever you use, and instead of conventional "hoop-house" configuration, you geodesic the thing; look at shelter systems crystal cave;
http://www.shelter- systems.com/ tunnle-shelters. html

http://www.shelter- systems.com/ tunnle-greenhous e.html

these are made using 1/2 " PVC; not as strong per piece, but geodesics will make up for a lot!!! If you are south, and bamboo is growing like weeds; use it!!!! That would be a dream to have that around; you can do
the geodesic tunnel system or even true geodesics; cross your joints and use 4"by 4 ft muslin dipped in ferro-cement to "ace bandage" wrap the joints. Garrett Connelly has been making trusses for small structures for
years and they stand up to high snow/ice loads;

Ideas welcome.

A friend moved onto a hippie homestead in AZ. The original structure was an old single wide trailer, the previous owner cut off one wall down the length and built a rock structure with a greenhouse window in one part onto it. You went down a couple steps into the addition, the whole place was essentially on big room. It was pretty funky, no insulation and the roof leaked, hot in the summer and cold in the winter. But it was an
oddly interesting concept which I'm sure could have been done much better. It was done by a single mom with two boys who were on a very tight budget.
